Manchester United staked their claim for Champions League success this season after a spectacular 3-0 win over Young Boys in their opening European fixture.

Whilst the likes of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw stood out for the Reds as they claimed victory over the Swiss champions, RedArmyBet’s man of the match goes to newcomer Diogo Dalot.

Some were sceptical about the signing of a 19-year-old defender who was unheard of by many fans.

Despite Jose Mourinho heaping praise on the youngster, seeing his name in United’s line-up after having only played 170 minutes of reserve team football since his knee operation back in May was a cause for concern for some fans, especially after United’s rocky start to the season.

When Jose Mourinho signed the defender from Porto, he had made just seven senior appearances. However last night fans caught a glimpse of just why Dalot was one of the manager’s summer signings.

Within minutes he made a promising start. Dalot broke free down the right on numerous occasions, a welcomed sight for United fans. The defender beat Young Boys Loris Benito with his pace, leaving the left-back behind as Dalot glided past him with ease.

His pace was matched well by Shaw, and the pair look exciting at the back for the Reds.

“All the players were really proud of him.” – Captain Paul Pogba was happy with Dalot’s performance.

Although Dalot’s crosses were not always on target, it is the effort and the confidence to take those chances that fans will have enjoyed. The youngster looked extremely comfortable, as if he were a regular in the starting line-up.

Making your debut in Europe could be an intimidating environment for any youngster, but for Dalot it is something he has experienced before.

Last season he made his Porto first-team debut against Liverpool in their round of 16 meeting in the Champions League. Not only last night, but in that game Dalot made an impressive impact which will have United fans excited to see more in the Premier League.

When Dalot put pen to paper for the Reds, Mourinho praised the youngster. He said:

“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”

Whether Dalot will prove himself to be the best is yet to be known, but one thing’s for sure, he knows how to make a debut.
