Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon hoping to deal their rivals’ title bid a blow while boosting their chances of a top-four Premier League finish.

United may have lost 3-1 at Anfield back in December, a result which put paid to Jose Mourinho’s time in charge, but they came out on top last time Jurgen Klopp’s men travelled to the Theatre of Dreams, with a Marcus Rashford brace securing a 2-1 win.

And United have produced some stellar performances against Liverpool down the years. Here, we look back at the Red Devils best victories over their Merseyside rivals at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

United 2-0 Liverpool, September 1998

Early in what would end up being a historic season for United, Alex Ferguson’s men picked up three points against Liverpool in impressive fashion.

A Denis Irwin penalty got the ball rolling after 19 minutes, and Paul Scholes sealed the victory 11 minutes from time.

United of course went on to claim a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League that season.

United 4-0 Liverpool, April 2003

Current caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was on the scoresheet as United thumped Liverpool 4-0 in April of the title-winning 2002/03 season.

Solskjaer’s last-gasp strike was the icing on the cake after a brace of penalties from Ruud van Nistelrooy and a Ryan Giggs goal gave United an unassailable lead.

United 3-0 Liverpool, March 2008

Wes Brown only scored five goals in his United career and none will have meant as much to the lad from Longsight as when he found the net against Liverpool in 2008.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani were also on the scoresheet in this dramatic win during the business end of the 2007/08 season, keeping up the momentum which saw the Red Devils complete a Premier League and Champions League double.

United 3-2 Liverpool, September 2010

With just six minutes left to play, Dimitar Berbatov sealed a hat-trick and three points for United in a dramatic affair at Old Trafford in September 2010.

The Bulgarian was United’s record signing when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur for £30million in 2008 and this treble against the Reds, ensuring Steven Gerrard’s brace didn’t steal a point for the away side, was the highlight of his four seasons at the Theatre of Dreams.

Berbatov finished the season as the Premier League’s joint-top scorer, and the second goal of his treble against Liverpool, an improvised overhead kick, was among the best strikes of the campaign.

United 3-0 Liverpool, December 2014

A Liverpool attack which included Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho was kept at arm’s length at Old Trafford in December 2014, with United dominant in a 3-0 victory.

Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie were on target for Louis van Gaal’s side.

United 3-1 Liverpool, September 2015

And United were in imperious form against Liverpool once again early the following season, as Christian Benteke’s stunning bicycle kick was rendered a mere consolation for the visitors.

Daley Blind and an Ander Herrera penalty fired United into a 2-0 second-half lead at Old Trafford before 19-year-old substitute Anthony Martial, making his debut after a £36million move from Monaco, introduced himself to his new supporters in spectacular style, tying Martin Skrtel in knots before cooly finishing past Simon Mignolet.
